Ceramic bearings run without lubrication.This is because ceramic materials do not micro-weld.Microwelds occur, usually with metals, when defects on the surface of the rolling element and raceway cause an arc interaction with another.This reduces the surface and greatly reduces the life of the bearing.Ceramic materials do not have this problem, making them suitable for a variety of applications requiring a free-lubricating environment.They are usually at high temperatures which means there is less thermal expansion to act in a stable way.It takes a lot more energy to increase the bond length of a covalent bond compared to that of a metal ionic bond.

Ceramic bearings have lower carrying capacity compared to metals and are sensitive to thermal shock.Thermal shock is when the temperature gradient within a material causes different expansion, which leads to internal stress.This pressure can exceed the ability of such a material to crack.Ceramics are also more difficult to achieve high quality surface finish.It can grind them to a radium 0.1 surface finish, which allows a P5 accuracy rating to be achieved.However, due to recent technological advances, higher precision classes are now available on Carter ceramic bearings.

Ceramic bearing advantages: can be used for high temperature, insulation, corrosion resistance, no lubrication occasions.

Disadvantages of ceramic bearings: difficult processing and high cost.

The difference between ceramic bearings and traditional bearings:

  1. The fatigue life of all-ceramic bearings is 10-50 times longer than that of all-steel bearings, and the life of mixed ceramic bearings is about 3-5 times higher than that of all-steel bearings.The service life of ceramic bearings is much higher than that of metal bearings.
  2. The friction coefficient of ceramic bearings is low, so the lubrication ability of oil-lubricated ceramic bearings is not lower than that of traditional lubricants commonly used in steel bearings in the case of thinness or lack of lubricating oil;
  3. The rigidity of ceramic INA bearings is larger than that of metal bearings, the elastic modulus of ceramic materials is high, and the rigidity is 15-20% larger than that of ordinary steel bearings.
  4. Compared with metal bearings, ceramic bearings are more resistant to corrosion and abrasion.Because of the different materials themselves, the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of ceramic bearings are directly better than those of metal bearings.
